The Singles Bracket

What a brutal singles field we have in 2025, everywhere we look is a great match to watch in the first round. We will crown new state champions with 2-time singles champ Kaden Taylor graduated, and his compatriots Nelson/Croatt in the singles field this year. Croatt, Dylan Schulte and Abhay Anil, three players ranked in the top 10 all season, were not eligible to be seeded as they did not win their districts. Tough first round matches for the district champs that drew these three (Holland, Bauermeister, Kumaresan). Every singles player in the field here is good, and this has got to be one of the most competitive singles draws we've seen in a number of years. I think three of the seeds will hold with #3 Bauermeister falling in the first round. Even after that, placing 5-8 this year is going to be an absolute battle. Making it to day two and placing is a big feat especially here in 2025.

Seeds

  1. Anthony Schulte, CR Prairie

  2. Micah Flaherty, Fort Dodge

  3. Garrett Bauermeister, Linn-Mar

  4. Jake Nelson, Waukee Northwest

1st Round Match to Watch:

#3 Garrett Bauermeister (Linn-Mar) vs Dylan Schulte (CR Prairie) - Somebody has to draw the younger Schulte first round, and it ended up being No. 3 seed Bauermeister. Garrett started the year strong with a super tiebreak win over Jake Nelson early in April, and since then, pretty much took care of business only suffering losses to Anthony Schulte and Abhay Anil. Dylan Schulte on the other hand had to play behind the his #1 ranked older brother, and had a fine freshman campaign himself, not dropping a match. Their district final saw the older brother come out on top in a tightly contested 6,4 match. Winner of this one makes the semis most likely, and I'd even think they could be in the finals as well. The entire top 10 rankings of the last release are all in the singles draw.

Singles Champion Prediction:

Anthony Schulte, CR Prairie

The Doubles Bracket

As the singles field has all top 10 ranked players featured in it, the doubles field on the flip side is more wide open that prior years it seems. Any of the seeds, and a number of other teams have a legit chance to win it, and if not win it, place top 8. I like the doubles field in the sense that there is no big favorite in my mind, but hurts it a little bit as more eyes will be on the singles matches. Dual sport Alex Mirsky along with partner Seppe Frantianni headline the event as the No. 1 seed, and have a win over #3 seed Waukee Northwest during the regular season dual. 2025 is one of those years that all 16 pairs have a legit shot at placing one way or another. Intriguing to see how this one shakes out.

Seeds

  1. Alex Mirsky/Seppe Frantianni, Valley

  2. Karthik Ganesh/Jatin Kodavatiganti, Pleasant Valley

  3. Vivek Kothari/Marteen Beekhuis, Waukee Northwest

  4. Anthony Medina/Derek Hua, Iowa City West

1st Round Match to Watch:

#4 Medina/Hua (Iowa City West) vs Fenton/Flynn (Waukee NW) - Tough draw for the Trojans out of the gate. Potentially the most interesting first round as it includes some of the states best teams battling in round one. Couple of seniors as well as the freshman Flynn on the court together, with multiple players in their first state tournaments. Nerves will play a big part early on, and then who can execute down the stretch to pull out the win.

Doubles Champions Prediction:

Vivek Kothari/Marteen Beekhuis (Waukee NW)

The Singles Bracket

No crazy seeding like 2024 coming into the 2025 1A singles tournament. Pretty standard for the seeds we have, where most people expect a Moon v LeGrand final. The top half of the bracket is rough, including Moon, Martineau, and Grote. Whoever of Martineau and Grote make it to the semis, get rewarded with the top seed. After that, I think the draw will be fairly chalk. LeGrand should roll through the bottom half along with Moon rolling until the semis. He unfortunately drew Martineau in his half, someone who is probably top 4 in the state, and could have been all year, but Wahlert elected to play him at number two singles, costing him a top 10 ranking all year with the struggles of teammate Hill. A few fun matches that are possible ahead to watch, but I think a number of these will be straight-forward too.

Seeds

  1. Easton Moon (North Polk)

  2. Charlie LeGrand (Xavier)

  3. Ruimin Luo (Fairfield)

  4. Cal Martineau (Wahlert)

1st Round Match to Watch:

Parker Stroh (Columbus) vs Keaton Nalean-Carlson (Decorah) - A sneaky first round match between these two. Stroh has been top six all season, including a win over Grote earlier in the year, but has had some close calls along the way as well. If he finds his consistent rhythm, he is a top four finisher. Decorah hasn't gotten as much credit as maybe they deserve. Nalean-Carlson stepped into the number one spot after Caden Branum graduated and has done a nice job this season. Not someone to overlook at all. Winner of this gets a great look at the semis against presumably Luo.

Singles Champion Prediction:

Easton Moon (North Polk)

The Doubles Bracket

A lot of chalk in the bracket this year. I don't think we have the depth as in years past, and the seeds (plus winner at the 3 seed line) will be the teams we see in the semis. We have two first round matches where Wahlert and Xavier play each other, what a way to start the tournament for them against their fiercest rival. Really opportunities for all the first round matches that do not involve one of the seeds, as I like a lot of those as toss ups. Show up and show up doubles pairs!

Seeds

  1. Bennett Link/Jacob Schmit, Xavier

  2. Nathan Myers/Joe Wright, SBL

  3. Jensen Hill/Evan Anderson, Wahlert

  4. Matthew Judka/Brady Willis, WSR

1st Round Match to Watch:

#3 Hill/Anderson (Wahlert) vs Johnson/Jasper (Xavier) - Winner of this match makes the finals.

Doubles Champions Prediction:

Bennett Link/Jacob Schmit (Xavier)
