2025 is the third year that the boys team state tournament is all played at one final site from the quarterfinals on. It seems that the changes in regards to districts and team postseason play have gone well, and this will mark the last part of those changes for us to see over the next two days. Quarterfinals and semi-finals are played tomorrow and the championship/3rd place match to take place on Wednesday. Waukee Northwest and Xavier enter the tournament as the #1 seeds. Last week was a great couple of days with the singles and doubles state tournaments, a lot of good tennis in a short amount of time and new champions were decided. It is worth nothing that tomorrow has rain all over the forecast. Enjoy some tennis this week as the 2025 edition of Iowa HS Tennis comes to a close.

2A Quarterfinals

#1 Waukee Northwest v #8 Dowling

Waukee NW Breakdown: The most dominant team this season, will get to play host to the team state tournament right in their backyard. After a quadruple crown in 2024, the Wolves turn their focus to a second consecutive team championship this week. The overwhelming favorites over the next couple of days.

Dowling Breakdown: A nice season for the Maroons. After narrowly missing a state berth in 2024, Dowling finds themselves in the final eight, and gets the tough task of the best team in Iowa.

Prediction: Waukee NW def. Dowling 5-0

#2 Prairie vs #7 Ames

Prairie Breakdown: A record breaking and historic 2025 season for the Prairie Hawks. For the first time, the singles final featured brothers (and teammates) squaring off against each other. Older brother Anthony Schulte captured the singles title in his final season, but the work is not done yet. This is the first state appearance for the Prairie program.

Ames Breakdown: A very nice season for the Little Cyclones this spring, and they finished strong down the stretch in team play. With wins over Marshalltown and CR Washington, I really think they should be seeded 6th with the indirect over Linn-Mar. Ames will need a lot to go right and win 3-6 singles as well as 3 doubles to take out Prairie.

Prediction: Prairie def. Ames 5-2

#3 Pleasant Valley vs #6 Linn-Mar

Pleasant Valley Breakdown: Another strong performance at state doubles a week ago bodes well for the Spartans entering the team tournament this week. Jatin Kodavatiganti and Karthik Ganesh came away with a doubles crown, as the Spartans look to reach the title match for the second year in a row. Although a very pedestrian schedule again this year, PV's depth will be tough to match.

Linn-Mar Breakdown: 14th team state tournament appearance for the Lions of Linn-Mar. The Lions are looking to get back to the final four for the third consecutive year and open with a tough task against the Spartans. One of the more down Lions teams we have seen in the past decade, a lot will need to go right to advance out of the first one.

Prediction: Pleasant Valley def. Linn-Mar 5-1

#4 Iowa City West vs #5 Johnston

IC West Breakdown: For the 14th consecutive season, the Iowa City West Trojans are in the state tournament. The Trojans will also be vying to make it to as many title matches in that same span again this spring. West has claimed the team state title in 8 of the last 13 seasons. A stumble against Prairie and Xavier led the Trojans to receiving the number four seed again this year.

Johnston Breakdown: This is the second state tournament appearance for the Johnston Dragons, as they are led by a pair of freshman at the top of the lineup. A fairly unexciting schedule this spring, the Dragons took care of business, and that is exactly what they needed to do. Very little state tournament experience on this team, but don't be surprised if they make it a bit closer than you might think.

Prediction: IC West def. Johnston 5-2

Semi-Finals Prediction:

Waukee NW def. IC West 5-0

PV def. Prairie 5-4

Finals Prediction:

Waukee NW def. PV 5-0

1A Quarterfinals

#1 Xavier vs #8 Boone

Xavier Breakdown:  Xavier has won 4 of the last 5 team titles and find themselves back into the #1 seed once again after being the number two seed in 2024. The Saints captured both the singles and doubles crowns last week, and are looking to complete the triple crown again. They are the favorites this week.

Boone Breakdown: A strong start to 2025 had Boone as a tough team among their 1A counterparts. That momentum was halted after #1 player Owen Schneider went down. In his absence, the Toreadors stepped up and showed whey they still belonged in the final eight. Unfortunately for them, they get the best team in 1A right away.

Prediction: Xavier def. Boone 5-0

#2 Wahlert vs #7 Pella

Wahlert Breakdown: Defending champs for a reason. Wahlert is among the most decorated boys teams in Iowa history, and they are determined to get their 12th title and be in sole possession of the most among boys programs. The Golden Eagles nearly came away with an individual trophy a week ago, but they are going to put it all out there the next couple of days now in the team tournament.

Pella Breakdown: After a string of years in the title match, Pella has regressed a little bit, but has much outperformed their expectations in 2025. Losing five starters, the Dutch didn't care and let the racquets do the talking. They extend their streak in the team tournament here and draw the defending champs out of the gate.

Prediction: Wahlert def. Pella 5-1

#3 SBL vs #6 WSR

SBL Breakdown: The Warriors earned their first state tournament berth in 2024 as a team. How do they follow that up? By earning their second berth here in 2025. Ranked in the top 3 all season, SBL is in contention for a title, and is the new kid on the block so to speak. A tricky matchup with WSR first, and if they get through this, they will have their highest place finish ever.

WSR Breakdown: A nice season from the Go-Hawks in 2025. A bit of a tumble down the stretch falling to Decorah at the end of the regular season, WSR is looking to play spoiler in the opening round tomorrow. Not only will they need to get some points at the top, they need their depth to be pivotal in pulling off the upset.

Prediction: SBL def. WSR 5-1

#4 Decorah vs #5 Ballard

Decorah Breakdown: No Branum, no problem. Decorah is back in the quarterfinals and this time in the 4 seed, with a great chance to advance to the top four. The Vikings took down WSR towards the end of the season and come in with some good confidence entering play tomorrow.

Ballard Breakdown: Ballard gets back to the team tournament after a one year hiatus I believe. A good season for the Bombers, who have become a mainstay in the top 10 over the last few seasons. This is a pretty even matchup against Decorah, and Ballard will need to get an advantage after singles if they want a good shot.

Prediction: Decorah def. Ballard 5-3

Semi-Finals Prediction:

Xavier def. Decorah 5-0

Wahlert def. SBL 5-2

Finals Prediction:

Xavier def. Wahlert 5-1

Good luck everyone!
