The girls are set to get their final spring postseason competition underway on Monday, beginning with the individual regionals hosted at 16 sites across the state. 708 players on 118 teams will begin their quest for singles and doubles state tournament berths, and ultimately, a chance at a championship.

Class 1A Tidbits

Host: Red Oak

Not a ton going on over here at Red Oak, with Clarinda being on the only ranked team to appear at this site. Riley Nothwehr would be the presumable favorite to win the singles field should she elect to go that route. A potential opportunity for Clarinda to advance all their entries to state, which is a difficult feat for any program.

Host: Denison

A fairly competitive region here at Denison headlined by #2 ranked Kuemper Catholic. A couple of top 10 ranked players in Kuemper's Kaylie Simons and South Hardin's Abby Teske will be here. Bishop Heelan has been a program on the rise the last year or so and has flirted with being in the top 10 this season as a team. If Simons and Teske both go singles, there is a nice draw opening up on the doubles side for everyone else.

Host: Pella

Pella and Pella Christian seem to always be paired, and sometimes co-host a regional, that seems to be the case again. The Dutch come in as the only ranked team in the top 10. North Polk had a doubles pair make the tournament last year when they had to work through the likes of Xavier at regionals to get there, and they will have a similar situation trying to get through Pella and some others to earn another tournament berth. Look for Pella, Pella Christian and North Polk to take the state bids at this site.

Host: Spencer

The first site with two top 10 ranked teams, the Spencer regional will host Sergeant Bluff-Luton and St. Edmond. Both provide some strong depth that can make things hard for other teams tomorrow in earning a bid. While tomorrow is all about individuals, both of these programs later on are looking for their first team state tournament berth in program history. Lauren Gibb of the Gaels has been ranked in the top 10 herself some throughout the year. I expect how the entries end up will determine a lot at this one.

Host: Columbus

In what is probably the most down year Columbus has had in recent memory, they end up hosting Dike New-Hartford as the other ranked team in their regional. Kate Holton is presumably going singles again here in 2025 to try and best her way to a singles state title. Dike's Izzy Norton and Aida Tott were 2024 state doubles qualifiers, and have been ranked in the top 10 this season individually along with Holton. Expecting we see Norton/Tott in doubles again, and for Columbus/Dike to battle it out for state tournament berths.

Host: Decorah

Another site with two top 10 ranked teams, in host Decorah and Aplington-Parkersburg. A few notable names as well that have been in the individual rankings this season, Decorah's Olivia Huinker, as well as APs Adria Neymeyer and Peyton Klooster. This is an intriguing site tomorrow as Neymeyer and Klooster were both 2024 singles state qualifiers. That being said, I could really see them going doubles this year, opening the door for some others to get a singles bid. Will be interesting to see how the Vikings put their entries out as well.

Host: Camanche

Top ranked Xavier heads over to Camanche in what seems to be a pretty favorable regional for the Saints who look to advance all their entries to state. Assumption and Dewitt have both had some great seasons over the last five years, with Dewitt bursting onto the scene the last few especially. Both programs this year though seem to be down from their 2020s standard. Defending singles state champion Gabi Fleming from Xavier will be in the singles field, leaving Isabel Tobin and Ruby Smith over in the doubles draw I believe.

Host: Fairfield

The only region with no ranked teams. Not a ton of known data on this one. Fairfield's Poojita Mukadam and Knoxville's Janie Maasdam lead the way at this site as top 10 ranked players. Assuming they both go to the singles draw tomorrow, doubles is wide open for a lot of people.

Class 2A Tidbits

Host: Waukee NW

The host Wolves have found their groove as of late after dismantling #2 Dowling this past week. That was the feel and expectation for Waukee NW entering the season with the star power they have. Shifting to individuals, they have a great chance to advance all their entries. Determining who goes in what is a mysterly until we see the bracket. My best guess is Riley Hilton and Lexi Moen are in the singles field, and we see the likes of London Taylor and Mia Deines in the doubles draw.

Host: Valley

Valley also has a great shot at getting all their entries to state with a favorable regional. The Tigers are led by Sophie Tannenbaum who has been ranked in the top 10 individually for much of the year. A strong depth for the Tigers will make things difficult for other teams in their quest for a state bid.

Host: Norwalk

Dowling is looking to bounce back after a rough finish to their dual season. Expecting the Maroons to get multiple bids to state again tomorrow, starting with my hot take, that Grace Frye/Juju Mauro will be in the doubles field looking to defend their doubles state title. After that, I am curious to see what route Victoria Bakros goes. Should Frye/Mauro be in the doubles field, that provides a golden opportunity for Roosevelt's Scarlett Brown to earn a singles state berth.

Host: Marshalltown

An intriguing regional with the resurgence of Ankeny's Kira Smith, who is my pick to win the singles field here. I also expect Waterloo West's Begic/Christensen to appear in the doubles field again as they finished fourth as a duo in 2024. The Wahawks also have Janet Toe who I think can be the other singles state bid in this regional. The host Bobcats will look to be in a position to grab a state bid as well, led by Kennedy Feldman.

Host: Iowa City West

One of the toughest regionals tomorrow. The Women of Troy are the highest ranked team, but also include Dubuque Hempstead just one spot below them, and welcome CR Jefferson's Lily Holland a top four singles place finishers last season. With the most likely crowded singles field at state coming up, I think this doubles draw will be brutal, where IC West and Hempstead could load up in this one. Holland is my pick to win the singles bid.

Host: Linn-Mar

Also a tougher regional when looking at all the hosts. North Scott's Madelyn Jepsen is the favorite for the singles title, but after that, it will be very interesting to see who is entered where for some of the other teams. Liberty has to decide if Kahler and Bollier are going singles or doubles. Host Linn-Mar has 2024 state qualifying doubles pair of Harris/Brandt that I think are teaming up again tomorrow, as well as freshman Reagan Boies who I think would be going singles.

Host: Ames

A potential quiet regional tomorrow with top four ranked Johnston headlining things up at Ames. Sidney Peterson has been in the top 10 individually for the Dragons much of the season, and is joined by Brianna Launderville who has had a very strong season herself at #2. Could see the Dragons entering them in doubles or singles honestly. Should they go doubles, the singles draw becomes more interesting, where I think Fort Dodge's Manuela Rodriguez has a great opportunity to get to the singles state tournament as she has quietly been having a very solid season this spring.

Host: Clinton

The toughest regional in my book this week. Four teams who have been ranked in the top 10 a lot of the year, as well as CR Washington who just beat #6 IC West this past week. Who gets entered where is going to be so key for some of these teams and their chances of state tournament berths. Clinton's Sescie Haan who started the season ranked #1 individually, should be going singles I think and should get through that. After that, there are a lot of players who will be fighting for other spots between Bettendorf, Clinton, Cedar Falls, CR Washington and Pleasant Valley. Popcorn!!
