May 19 Weekend Recap

We are really hitting the post season grind now! What an eventful weekend with some teams already into the final four, some teams haven't even played a post season meet yet. To get you caught up on all the action, I put together some quick headlines over the past few days, as well as links to the live updated tournament brackets. This week there will be boys singles and doubles state tournament previews. A roundtable feature where myself and my (newly named: 2A Redwood) guest will answer some questions about this years state tournament. As always, if you have comments, corrections, or just want to talk tennis, comment here, email iowahstennis@gmail.com or message me on twitter!

Updated Team Tournament Brackets:

Girls:

  • Waverly-Shell Rock blanks Spencer to reach the Quarterfinals. WSR was denied a final four appearance a year ago at the hands of Xavier. The Go-Hawks will have their chance again on Tuesday against the likes of #1 Columbus.

  • #1 Columbus to battle LeMars on Monday for a spot in the Quarters against WSR. Columbus had to compete in the play in round, so they have won 3 matches already. They battle LeMars tomorrow where I would expect little trouble.

  • #2 Xavier, Red Oak set for Quarterfinal showdown. Xavier reached the quarters easily and Red Oak fought off a Kuemper team 5-3. Red Oak had a slow start to the year but really came on strong with wins over Glenwood and Shenandoah in the same week.

  • #10 Pella Christian hangs on by a thread, will take on #7 Shenandoah in final eight tomorrow. PC took a 4-2 advantage into doubles over #4 Ballard and lost two of the matches to make it 4-4. PC put a halt to the Ballard comeback and clinched the final match in a super tiebreaker.

  • #3 Fairfield stays dominant, awaits the winner of #9 Wahlert and Assumption. DW and Assumption had started the match but rain quickly suspended play. Fairfield is looking to take the next step and improve from their quarterfinal appearance last year.

  • #1 Ames, #2 IC West #3 Dowling #4 Pleasant Valley, and #5 Johnston ready to begin state title quest Monday. Rain had scattered everything the last few days in the Iowa High School tennis world. All of the top 5 should be ready to go in their quest to the final four in Bettendorf.

  • #9 Valley and #7 Urbandale locked in at 3-3 before play being suspended. High stakes for two similarly matched teams. A thriller in the making, both teams were locked in a three a piece before that pesky rain came in to make things difficult. Play resumes tomorrow.

  • Clinton with a 5-4 thriller over Hempstead. The River Queens reward? A quarterfinal appearance where they await the winner of the IC West region!

  • #6 Cedar Falls and Kennedy to class for Quarterfinal berth. Both teams came away with wins at ease this weekend and now will face off for that state tournament appearance.

Boys:

  • #1 IC West returns to the state team tournament final four for the 9th straight year. The Trojans were dominant again in their substate taking out Dubuque Senior and Bettendorf with 5-0 scores easily. Back to Ankeny they go.

  • #2 Pleasant Valley rolls #7 CF, #5 Linn-Mar to reach their 3rd final four. Being moved inside to the Quad City Tennis Club did not phase the Spartans. They rolled to two 5-0 wins against two top 10 foes. PV reaches the final four for the 2nd time in three years.

  • #6 Ankeny Centennial upsets #4 Wash, hangs on against #8 Ames for final four berth. The Jags reach the final four for the first time in school history with nail biting 5-4 wins over Wash and Ames. How about that for a reward to play at your home courts?!

  • #7 Norwalk blows past #4 Ballard, #8 Boone to continue their state title quest. I did not know Norwalk was going to bring the hammer, but they sure did. A trip to Des Moines on the 28th awaits!

  • #2 CR Xavier survives "death" district with wins over #5 Columbus and #1 Wahlert. If the committee actually put thought into preparing their district and substate pairings, two, or maybe three of these teams would have a good shot at the final four. Xavier avenges their regular season loss to the Golden Eagles.
